Taiwan startup Gogolook, the team behind popular caller identity tracing app Whoscall, is a top-notch example of youth entrepreneurship benefitting from ROC government support. Established in 2012 by three National Tsing Hua University alumni, Gogolook was sold last year for NT$529 million (US$17.5 million) to South Korea’s Naver Corp., owner of instant messaging app Line. Whoscall’s innovative features also earned praise from Google Inc. Executive Chairman Eric E. Schmidt. The success of Gogolook can serve as an example for the young people of Taiwan to expand their horizons and tap the opportunities the world has to offer, company co-founder Jeff Kuo said.


Taiwan’s delegation to the 67th World Health Assembly in Geneva engaged in dialogue with its U.S. counterpart May 19 on health promotion, preventive health care and weight control. Minister of Health and Welfare Chiu Wen-ta, head of the 25-member delegation, said Taiwan’s weight control program has successfully shaved an annual 1 million kilograms for three consecutive years off the national total. The program’s 19-point monitoring system was of particular interest to U.S. delegation head Kathleen Sebelius, former Secretary of Health and Human Services. Chiu also invited Sebelius to share her experiences at the Global Health Forum Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 in Taipei City.


Taiwan Metal Creation Museum in Tainan City’s Yongkang District was recently included as a feature facility in the international tourism factory project by the Industrial Development Bureau under the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs. Established by Chih Kang Material Co., the museum showcases a wide array of innovative metal artwork sporting distinctive local colors. TMCM, which is the first IDB-certified facility in southern Taiwan, is expected to prosper under the project. (YHC-JSM)
